Steampunk Hold
Apostates of the Screaming Forge. Your spawners are the slowest in the realm and they do not run at their rating. Overdriven they out-muster almost anybody, and cook themselves doing it — win before the gauges go red.
Run it past the rating
How the Overwound fight
Strong: Four constructs, three engines, and spawners that can be run past their rating.
Weak: One horse in the whole hold — everything else walks, and it walks slowly.
The Steampunk Hold field 26 troops across twelve classes — 2 levy, 4 ranged, 1 cavalry, 2 shock, 2 anti-armor, 2 support, 3 caster, 1 elite, 3 siege, 4 construct, 1 legend and 1 titan.
Trait and powers
Every Steampunk Hold troop fights with the kingdom's trait: +18% health · +12% damage · −6% speed. It is added in battle on top of the figures on each troop's own page.
- Spawners overdrive — 30% faster musters, bought with their own hull
- And they are built for it: +24% building HP to spend
- Nothing here hurries — 6% slower on every pair of legs it has

The Steampunk Hold roster
All 26 troops, by class and then by what their spawner costs to raise. Range is in the field's own units — a melee blow reaches a few dozen, the longest bows several hundred.
| Troop | Class | Raise | Health | Damage | Range | Speed | Pop | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Stoker | Levy | 350 | 53 | 7 | Melee | 70 | 1 | He feeds the boilers. When the boilers are fed he is handed a bar. |
Rivetman | Levy | 450 | 59 | 8 | Melee | 64 | 1 | A hold-hand with a rivet gun and no training worth the name. There are a great many of him. |
Cogshot | Ranged | 750 | 44 | 12 | 135 | 66 | 1 | Scrap cut into discs and thrown very fast. Cheap, and it does not care what it hits. |
Steam Lance | Ranged | 750 | 44 | 13 | 150 | 60 | 2 | A lance that is mostly hose. It puts a bolt through two men and a wall. |
Vent Gunner | Ranged | 1,700 | 60 | 14 | 120 | 58 | 2 | He carries the vent instead of standing near it. The hold approves. |
Chainshot Crew | Ranged | 1,800 | 72 | 28 | 175 | 48 | 3 | Two weights and a length of chain, fired flat. It goes through a rank sideways. |
Boiler Rider | Cavalry | 1,900 | 153 | 22 | Melee | 116 | 3 | A walking boiler with a saddle bolted where the pressure gauge used to be. |
Pistonfist | Shock | 750 | 91 | 26 | Melee | 110 | 2 | Both arms are the machine. He does not carry it, he is wearing it. |
Hammerworks | Shock | 1,100 | 113 | 33 | Melee | 102 | 2 | A drop-hammer taken off its mount and given legs. |
Pressure Guard | Anti-Armor | 750 | 108 | 26 | Melee | 58 | 2 | A pry-bar on a pressure line. It opens plate the way it opens a seized hatch. |
Wrenchbreaker | Anti-Armor | 1,000 | 113 | 33 | Melee | 62 | 1 | Every hold has one man who fixes things by hitting them correctly. |
Bellowsman | Support | 1,100 | 52 | — | Melee | 80 | 1 | Air is the whole hold. He brings it where it is short. |
Gaugekeeper | Support | 1,500 | 61 | — | Melee | 74 | 2 | She reads the dials and decides who is about to fail. Sometimes it is a man. |
Sparkwright | Caster | 2,500 | 51 | 17 | 160 | 62 | 2 | The hold learned lightning by accident and has not stopped apologising. |
Governor | Caster | 2,850 | 56 | 14 | 150 | 58 | 3 | It regulates a machine by refusing it steam. It regulates a man the same way. |
Plague Doctor | Caster | 4,100 | 129 | 24 | 150 | 74 | 3 | The hold has always run on bad air. He is the man who learned to bottle it. |
Foreman | Elite | 3,300 | 120 | 23 | Melee | 84 | 3 | Nothing in the hold moves without him and nothing gets past him either. |
Steam Ram | Siege | 2,350 | 181 | 32 | Melee | 42 | 3 | A ram that no longer needs men to swing it, which is the whole argument of the hold. |
Air Ship | Siege | 2,450 | 181 | 27 | 135 | 40 | 3 | Eleven tons of riveted gasbag that arrives whenever it arrives, and opens its floor over your roof. |
Pressure Mortar | Siege | 2,600 | 100 | 29 | 235 | 38 | 3 | It does not use powder. It uses the same pressure that runs the hold, held far too long. |
Iron Hound | Construct | 2,000 | 138 | 20 | Melee | 128 | 2 | It was built to find leaks. It finds other things now and it is still very fast. |
Crawler | Construct | 2,950 | 251 | 22 | Melee | 38 | 4 | It repairs itself, badly, forever. The hold has stopped asking how. |
Cogwalker | Construct | 3,050 | 242 | 23 | Melee | 44 | 4 | Four legs, one governor, and no instruction anybody living remembers giving it. |
Brass Golem | Construct | 3,300 | 274 | 25 | Melee | 40 | 4 | Cast in one piece, in a mould that took eleven years and killed two men. |
The Great Engine | Legend | 5,950 | 288 | 29 | 120 | 54 | 6 | The thing the hold built instead of stopping. It has been running for ninety years. |
Boiler King | Titan | 8,450 | 509 | 54 | Melee | 50 | 9 | What is left of the last Hold-King, welded into the machine he refused to shut down. |
